Transform your Outdoor Space

Revamp Your Deck for a Welcoming Vibe

Read on for 6 steps to create your Dream Outdoor Space!

These deck ideas will help you create a zone that combines comfort and style, perfect for any season. From space planning to choosing furniture and decor, you’ll find all the steps below to create an inviting outdoor space.

01

Space Planning

Before making any deck furniture or decor purchases, consider the following questions:

  1. What will I use the space for? (e.g., solo relaxation, family meals, entertaining guests)
  2. Based on the primary use, which furniture pieces do I need? (e.g., couch, dining table, hanging egg chair, bar & stools)
  3. Do I have kids or pets to consider? (e.g., would darker colors and washable items be better?)
  4. Do I need storage for pillows and throws?
  5. Will I be BBQ-ing or cooking on the deck?

Next, measure your deck, including length, width, ceiling height, banister height, and the placement of steps, windows, and doors. Create a floorplan sketch and use it to experiment with different furniture configurations before buying anything.

Takeaway: Plan your outdoor space thoroughly before making any purchases!

02

Create a color palette and vibe

Develop a Pinterest board with images of outdoor spaces you are drawn to

Start by developing a Pinterest board with images of outdoor spaces you love. To keep things simple, check out my post on creating a color palette. I suggest keeping the palette limited to 3-4 colors maximum. Consider the vibe and style you want to create as an extension of your home.

Style considerations:

  • Eclectic Boho: Terracotta, rattan, macrame, egg chair, textured throws, string lights.
  • Sophisticated Traditional: Black metal pots, dark stained wood, grey furniture, deep blue decor.
  • 60’s Pop: Bright curvy furniture, fun bar stools, oversized globe lights, groovy prints.

Think about how your deck will tie into the rooms that lead out to it, considering style, color, and any plants or flowers you might include.

Takeaway: Align your deck’s color palette and style with your home’s interior and home exterior.

03

Add Privacy & Views

Do you want more privacy or a cozier feel on your deck? Consider outdoor curtains, bamboo blinds, screens, or large potted shrubs. Curtains can add a dreamy ambiance or a fun pop of color, while backdrops like trellises or bamboo screens can create a secluded spot.

If you have a great view, make it a focal point of your deck. Or create a focal point with an outdoor fireplace & mantle, a water feature, or one stunning tree in a pot.

Takeaway: Treat your deck like any other room by adding privacy and a focal point.

This all sounds great! Let’s book a quick chat to get started.

04

Outdoor Lighting

Mix different types of lighting to create a cozy atmosphere. Combine pendant lights, floor lamps, string lights, and a fire pit or fire table. A wireless table lamp is another outdoor lighting idea that can make the space. This mix will enhance both the functionality and mood of your space.

Layering different light sources allows you to adjust the ambiance to suit various occasions, whether it’s a lively gathering or a quiet evening. Additionally, incorporating dimmers can provide flexibility, letting you control the intensity of the light to create the perfect setting at any time. I also love having my string lights on a timer and have them shut off when I should be winding down for the evening.

Takeaway: A variety of lighting adds to the mood and style & functionality of your deck.

05

Decor Ideas & Plants!

Add layers of texture and comfort with outdoor rugs, throw pillows, and cozy blankets. Elements like oversized floor cushions, layered rugs, and eclectic throw pillows can enhance the cozy vibe.

If you need to add some shade, try: awnings, shade sales, or umbrellas. I am a big fan of wide stripes on umbrellas and awnings for a preppy, crisp look! Sun-loving climbing plants, screens and bamboo blinds can also provide relief from the blazing sun!

For plants, I always recommend visiting your local nursery, where you can ask advice on light conditions & care needed. Aside from a few decorative plants, I love having an herb garden growing on my deck, to easily nip out while cooking.

No space for plants? Consider using the vertical space with plant walls, hanging baskets, or pots that mount over the deck railing.

No green thumb or extended trips planned for the summer? Consider artificial plants. There are many fantastic ones on the market at very approachable pricing. Just remember to dust them regularly to keep them shiny and green!

Takeaway: Decorate with texture and plants to create a warm and inviting atmosphere.

06

Deck Add-ons

Consider adding luxurious deck touches like:

  • A projector and screen for movie nights.
  • A fountain or water feature.
  • A fire pit or table for s’mores and warmth.

Takeaway: Enhance your deck with luxurious elements to make it the place to be.
